It would seem that I'm one of the few people out there with a Grandchild. I picked up a unit from Alto Music last week. I bought it to replace a Retro Revolver, and so far I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I don't have any experience with an actual Fairchild or hardware Fairchild clones, but the Grandchild does what you would expect a great Vari-Mu to do. It seems to add a depth and weight that I've never really experienced in another unit or plug-in. I've seen people commenting on how clean it sounds, but I would say its far from transparent. It definitely does a thing. My biggest struggle so far is figuring out what I'm going to use it on while mixing. It sounds great on everything I've thrown at it.// 1985labs

It has the *thing*. Its been so long since I've purchased anything with the thing, and I had the Unfairchild for a while (big respect, yet, no 'thing'). The thing isn't necessarily the actual compression, and calling it 'glue' will reduce it to a mere funcional trait. I'm using much of my brain power to not call it magic, but it feels like I now posses magic in my lunchbox.// J.views

Gotten mine today. Those tubes inside are huge! I expected a bunch of these tiny tubes that you’d find in certain guitar pedals. Threw it on a cp-70 emulation and the (software-) instrument became alive instantly. I really like that thing and can’t take it off anymore. Its a bit like wanting a Lambo but then getting a 911 and loose all gravings because it delivers so well and is generally a way more digestible fit.// _Commander_

I own 500 format compressors and also hardware tube compressors. My impression: The Grandchild 670 seems to be in a different league compared to other 500 format compressors. The Grandchild 670 is not an analytical compressor, it colors the sound by changing the frequency spectrum. But it does it in a very nice way, typical of tubes. In direct comparison to other hardware tube compressors, I experience the same airy sensation typical of tube devices with transformers such as L2A2, Collins, etc. The device emulates the legendary Fairchild compressor. In direct comparison to Fairchild's excellent Universal Audio Plugin, I like the Grandchild 670 much better. The compression is certainly comparable, but I like the sound of the Grandchild better. A comparison with the 500 series Anamod 660 module favors the Grandchild for the same reason. As with all Heritage Audio devices, the workmanship of the module is excellent.// Rainer Weissauer

I was looking for a recognized mixbus and mastering compressor, but, for a question of musical style, less tense and punchy than an SSL, less 80's connotation. This is exactly what this Grandchild offers, a high-class compression, very transparent, but softer and silkier than the SLL. We really find the character of a Fairchild, the attack and release times are the same, it is not for nothing that the Fairchild is legendary, whatever the settings, it is very difficult to make it sound bad. Tested in a hybrid analog/digital config on mixbus at the analog console output, it handles high levels without flinching and what comes out is always improved, thickened, better balanced in frequency. I left the low cut setting as original, so it is in the intermediate position, i.e. -12dB at 100Hz. It works perfectly with music that is quite heavy in low frequencies, no pumping effect when remaining in a low reduction (mixbus). I think it will also be very useful for voice recording, for peak control, as an alternative to an optical compressor, in a less colorful register than an LA2A, but with much greater versatility of use. Like many, I haven't had the opportunity to test a real Fairchild 670, just plugins. But I have, in hardware, an LA2A and a formidable vari mu with Retro 176 tube (tribute to the UA 176). So I'm used to high-end analog tube compression. I find that despite the use of tubes only for compression (principle of vari-mu compression) and not in the rest of the signal, the sound of the Grandchild is really open, clean and warm at the same time, in short close to a high-end lamp device. Heritage Audio's reputation is well established and here again, they have surpassed themselves by successfully adapting the concept of the Fairchild 670 limiter in a 2 unit wide module in the 500 series. I do not regret my purchase and have already planned the re-mastering of all my titles using this device.// Mr Haze

It just makes the signal better and more noticeable, not just minimal. There are some examples online that are not optimized in terms of gain, so I immediately tried it on a master, adjusted the volume and the result is: Good glue throughout the file, a kind of widening of the stereo base, a little Warmer in the bass but still not smooth. Very useful for mixing and mastering!// JohnPiano

Revelation! I have had this compressor since April 2024 and I am increasingly surprised. The Grandchild 670 has identical compression character to the original Fairchild 670 in a minimalist casing. It is true that there are minimal differences in the color of material processed with similar parameter settings between Grandchild and Fairchild, but this can only be heard and noticed when using high-quality headphones or monitors in a studio with excellent control room acoustics. . In my opinion, the difference is that after processing in Granchild there is a little less detail in the upper mids, but a little more in the bass. Everything else is insignificant to the average listener, making it an excellent tool for mixing and mastering at the highest level. And considering the price, comparing it to its Heritage Audio sibling, the Herchild 670, it's a pure eye-opener and a surprise! I definitely recommend it to anyone who always cares about the nobility of sound and beauty! // Dareczek
